In Portuguese we do have “Faceta”, which does sounds a bit like “face”. For us its used in the sense of a “perspective, a point of view” of the data. The facets are part of the results of a filtering. You look at them applied an you are seeing a segmented version of the items list, one that is better defined by the applied filter values, scope or context.
I’m not sure of the origins of the word in the German context but it might be related considering that jewellery does requires “polishing” a rock till it becames something of value. The important is to make sense in the context. Have you asked any help from some AI giving the context of being a word used in computing to refer to filter values?
I’d asked Deepl and Google translate to transalte the strings. They translated ‘facet’ with ‘facettiert’. This isn’t a common term in today German. I made some more research and found that its used for a ‘multiple criteria search’ often used in shopping systems If we buy clothes we can search by size, color and material and get a selection of results that match all criteria from an AND search.
