Tainacan as an institutional research repository

Hi, I am a big fan of this plugin. I just discovered it recently, and I find it very simple to use, but also very powerful. And I was wondering if Tainacan can be used as an institutional repository for a big university with over 50,000+ research papers. What do you think?

Hey @djafinidad, welcome to our forum!

We’re glad to hear about your interest in Tainacan. While mainly being used by Museums, Tainacan can be used for other digital repositories purposes, but you will probably miss some specifics (as the DOI integration that you mentioned in the other topic). So I guess it would depend on how much you would be willing to adapt to its restrictions.

Regarding the size of your repository, 50.000+ is a large amount. As we’re built entirely upon WordPress data model, what we gain in metadata flexibility we tend to loose a bit in performance. It will of course depend on your server settings as well but I would recommend for anyone with more than 20.000 itens to use ElasticPress – WordPress plugin | WordPress.org with an ElasticSearch instance in order to offer real fast results. With that working well, things should be fine.
