Good morning,
We are using Tainacan at our organization to build collections. We currently have two collections, but we are having a problem with one of them uploading PDF documents and images. Here is the scenario:
Via Tainacan, we upload the file under the “add new: add one file.” In the “Document” window, we select “file” to upload the file. The file will upload, but shows as a blank document. It does produce a thumbnail, but the document window will show our standard, “Sorry, we couldn’t find what you’re looking for.” When we look into the WordPress media library, it shows that there is a file there, but again, it is blank. To bypass this, we have had to directly upload the file into the media library, the use the link from the media library in the document section of Tainacan.
Where the problem arises is that we are wanting to use the search feature so that users can search for terms to pull up items in the collection that contain those terms. The search will not search in the linked documents, but it will to an uploaded document that it says is not there. For instance, I have two documents on a test collection (set to private). One is uploaded directly to the media library and linked to the document, and the other is uploaded via Tainacan’s interface, but shows it is not there. However, if I use the search function in Tainacan, it will find the document uploaded via Tainacan’s interface, even though it still shows as a file not found.
What do we need to do to be able to have the files uploaded via Tainacan’s interface show up to view instead of getting a “file not found” or having to upload directly to the library and linking?
How do I check which theme I am using? I am working with someone in the tech department that is setting all of this up, but due to having other priorities, he is not able to post here.
Here is the site landing page for the collection that we built by uploading the PDF files directly into the library then linking them over to the documents section. I have temporarily turned on the test site. As you will see on the test site, there are two thumbnails showing. One of them is to the linked document, the other to the document uploaded directly via Tainacan. If you do a search for the word “Hayes”, which appears in both documents, you will see it return only the document that was uploaded via the Tainacan interface.
Don’t worry about taking time to answer, we all have different timezones and availability here.
Thanks for the detailed report. Taking a look at the provided links, I was able to view all the PDF files, even the one that was uploaded directly, like I believe this one is:
Hello @mateus.m.luna,
Yes, that is the publication that shows as “missing” on my end. I decided to delete my browser cookies/cache/history and then I was able to view it. However, when I uploaded a new one, it shows as “missing” as well until I clear my cookies/cache/history again. I am using Google Chrome (version 1320.0.6723.117 Official Build). Is there a setting I need to do in Google Chrome to keep from having to clear out my cache?
That is weird @Robert_Stewart… Can you confirm that it is not some network issue? Does someone else you know who has access to the same public link using another wifi for example faces the same issue? It sounds a bit like a firewall issue… BTW if you try to open the link (when it is not working) with the web console open, do you seen any error messages?
It definitely is not a network issue, at least from an internal point. (I have taken the test and student publications offline at the moment) I opened Microsoft Edge, and it was able to see everything just fine without doing anything with the cache. I am hardwired into the network, so I am not running off of wifi. I will test uploading files this weekend from my home computer, which is outside of the school’s network, to see if I run into any issues. I will report back with what I find.
Ok, please let us know, it is not something I have a guess now for a good cause. Browser related is weird too because Edge is much based on Chrome so it wouldn’t make sense…
My apologies for the delayed response, we were out of work for a national holiday yesterday. While at home this weekend, I tested this out. When I logged into Chrome using my work credentials, I would run into the same issue: the files would show blank in my library, and via Tainacan it would show as “file not found.” However, when I went through my personal login via Chrome, I was able to see everything just fine. When I open my settings on my work Chrome account, it states that “Your browser is managed by your organization.” So, I am wondering if there is something that is being managed that is causing the issue.
Someone asked above which theme I am using. How do I check this?
Your theme right now is Tainacan Interface, you can see in the Appearence menu. But that won’t affect this particular situation, the media component is rendered by the plugin.
Considering what you just said, I wonder if these setttings are not some privacy-related stuff or maybe some extension… because Browser extensions get sync according to your account.
I am going to check with the IT person I am working with to see if there are privacy policies in place that may be causing the issue. It probably won’t be until next week that I reply, but I will let you know.
I have been having that problem with everything even photos. What i do is upload through the media Library and afterwards I linked to the corresponding post in tainacan. Then I go to the post and click in “document” and then I choose the file I linked. That way I get a thumbnail too.
Are you sure it is the exact same situation because this seemed to be browser or network related and to make sure you should validate the same tests we mentioned before. Otherwise it could be something else worth investigate… but
then we would need more details.
In any case the solution you mentioned does work but keep in mind that if you have private items, the path to were they are uploaded won’t prevent unauthenticated user access, as explained here:
@mateus.m.luna ,
My apologies, I have been working on another project so forgot to reply back with my results.
The issue is still happening on my end. I am connected directly to the school’s network, but I am checking to see if the website is perhaps residing behind another firewall. I will post here once I get an answer back about this.
