Exuse me for my ignorance in this matter but, is there a way to add more than one file for an item?
Are there logical arguments why a repository should not allow this?

Yes! You do that by adding Attachments. Check the attachments tab in the item edition form. The way these attachments will be displayed alongside the main document varies from theme settings.
